I am always seeing features on how natural supplements are not regulated, how they are not FDA approved, how they have potentially serious side effects, etc. In comparison to what? They have talked about liver failure with a product called kava, an island based ingredient. The liver damage and failure is comparable to alcoholic drinks, which realistically speaking is not as bad as you think in the small amounts generally used in these supplements! And how many people are also drinking alcohol regularly when taking something like kava? I’m not saying by any means that we should excuse any of these side effects. But frankly, when you compare it to something milder like Ambien or more serious such as Seroquel or for that matter Xanax, obviously it does not even begin to cause side effects on the same level!
I think the important thing to remember is to avoid abuse even of natural supplements. When it comes to natural supplements, they are not automatically safe! Sleeping pills are sleeping pills and should not be taken unless you are actually having sleeping problems, whether temporary or more long term. And if sleeping pills don’t work for you, stop taking them! Nothing works for everybody, and there are different approaches that you can always choose from.
But there are many more natural and safe alternatives in the natural market than the prescription market. Lunesta is probably the safest prescription sleeping pill. But when it comes right down to it, ingredients like melatonin and for that matter valerian root or chamomile have no known side effects at all! So isn’t it worth it to check out those natural and safe alternatives first?

If you want to have a good nights rest you should probably invest in a good mattress. If you are sleeping on an old, uncomfortable bed, chances are you might be waking up a lot, waking up with sore muscles, kinked neck or bad dreams. They say you should go no longer than 10 years with your mattress. I had a mattress that literally dipped in the middle from where I always slept.
They have some awesome mattresses now. I like the pillow top mattresses. What I did was add a memory foam on top of my mattress which basically allows your body to get comfortable as it forms around you. A great mattress coupled with a dark room will help you sleep so much better. The darker the room the better for me. I cover my clock and dvd player so that green LED night doesn’t show. Another thing that helps me sleep better is to go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, that way my body clock stays regulated. Keep the temperature in the bedroom no higher than 70 degrees F.

How much sleep does a person need? Well, that all depends on the person. Some individuals can get by on only a few hours of sleep a night, others, like myself, need seven to nine hours each night. We all have what’s called an internal body clock, otherwise known as a circadian rhythm, which helps regulate our 24-hour cycle. These circadian rhythm disorders can be caused by many things, including: the type of shift you have at work, pregnancy, time zone changes associated with jet lag and travel, some medications, and even changes in routine.
There are some behavioral therapies that can aid with these things. For example there is relaxation training, cognitive therapy, stimulus control, sleep restriction therapy, and sleep hygiene. Did you know that aging plays a role in sleep? Have you ever noticed that older people don’t seem to sleep as much. I know my grandma doesn’t sleep nearly as much as she used to. She goes to bed at a decent hour, but gets up quite early.

All I want is to sleep all of the way through the night. I hate waking up every couple of hours to go to the bathroom. Fixing that seems like a pretty easy thing to do, right? Just stop drinking liquids before you go to sleep. Whenever you feel dehydrated or really thirsty we will reach for a glass of water (hopefully), or coffee, soda, or tea. Obviously the more you drink the more you are going to need to relieve yourself. Drinking coffee before bed is not only going to cause you to be more dehydrated, but it may keep you up at night as well. I try and cease drinking any liquids at least 2 hours before I’m going to go to sleep.
If you are drinking water throughout the day your body will stay hydrated and you hopefully won’t need that large glass of something right before you go to bed. Another thing I have stopped doing is eating a large meal right before bedtime. When your body is trying to digest the food during the night, it can cause you to wake up several times. Also, sleeping in a comfortable room and bed will help you sleep better.

Tylenol PM - September 13th, 2009

Sleeping pills work best and are safest if used for a short time and are even more effective if you change what is going on in your life that is causing you to not be able to sleep. I started taking Tylenol PM several years ago and in the beginning they worked fine. But the longer I used them, the less effective they were. Acetophetamine has the potential side effect of that of causing liver damage.
If you are taking large doses of Tylenol PM and have been taking for a long time you should consider having your liver checked to make sure there hasn’t been any damage done. Although it is not usually common, symptoms of liver damage include abdominal pain, nausea, can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes, and unusual bleeding or severe fatigue. Reported blood problems such as easy or unusual bleeding or bruising can also occur when taking too much Tylenol PM. Another possible side effect of taking Tylenol PM is the potential for having low blood sugar. Symptoms of low blood sugar would include fatigue, increased hunger, fainting or dizziness.

Lunesta - September 11th, 2009

This blog is going to be about my experience with Lunesta. I went to see my doctor about getting on something that could help me sleep. She gave me some information about a few different sleeping aids. She talked to me about the drug, Lunesta. This particular sleeping pill acts very quickly, which means, as soon as you take it you start feeling drowsy and so you should make sure that you are ready to go to sleep and are able to devout at least eight hours to sleeping. I had heard that one of the major side effects of Lunesta was that it leaves a very unpleasant taste in your mouth.
Some of the other side effects include: morning drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, and in some severe cases memory loss, anxiety or allergic reactions. The only side effect I experienced was the unpleasant taste and dry mouth. The first night I took it I fell asleep just fine, but the next morning I had the worst cotton mouth of my life. Not only that, the unpleasant taste I mentioned above, was awful! It took half of the next day to get rid of it. I tried taking Lunesta for the next several days, but just wasn’t able to get past the dry mouth and nasty taste.
