The difference between a good night’s sleep and a rough night can be completely dependent on one hormone.

Melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland of the brain also known as the “hormone of darkness.” Melatonin is responsible for a number of biological functions. One of the most important responsibilities of melatonin is regulating the sleep-wake cycle.

Melatonin levels in the brain fluctuate daily. The hormone is inhibited during the day and secreted most in the dark to cause drowsiness and help onset the sleep cycle. In essence, melatonin is a biological clock sending signals to the brain and body to help you fall asleep and help you wake up.

As people age, the secretion of melatonin begins to decrease. As such, sleep supplements began providing melatonin in the formula for at least a decade. By providing an extra dose of melatonin, sleep supplements can help encourage sleep naturally. Supplementing melatonin can also help reestablish healthy sleep patterns without running the risk of dependence on other drugs and medications.

Several clinical studies have concluded that the short-term use of melatonin can help reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, increase the hours of sleep, and even help people wake up refreshed and alert.

There are contradicting studies about the appropriate dosage of melatonin in a sleep aid. Most studies seem to suggest that anywhere between 0.3 mg to 3 mg is effective in treating sleep disorders and insomnia.

Taking large doses of melatonin consistently can cause side effects. Too much melatonin in the body can be counterproductive and actually cause insomnia rather than treat insomnia.

The strong antioxidant effects of melatonin may even strengthen the immune system. However, taking a melatonin supplement for extended periods of time should be discussed with a doctor.
